In autumn trees look gorgeous. But it is impossible to wait for the period to take a photograph of the tree.

You are free to use wide-angle to the shorter telephoto camera. Compact camera is also available for you. In dense forest light is not sufficient all time. So, it is better to take a hardy trivet. If you are going for a long travel you should take a bag that has multiple pockets and enough space so that you can take all the essential things with you.
Go for wood
You can get trees easily near by us like our garden, beside the roads etc. For getting excellent specimen you are suggested to go out of doors. Before dragging your tripod please check is the garden or forest is suitable for using tripod or not. For working on a group of trees it is convenient to take the overall scene where as you can crop the image when you need an ulterior look.
Select a suitable time
As highly contrasting light is not good for photography you should choice late morning or afternoon for tree photography. A gloomy day is never suitable for photography. But there has an exception for some close up photography.
Add texture and select the proper pattern
You should get closer when you are going for a single tree. Go to the trunk and cover some texture in your photo range.
Including artificial things
Keep some artificially made objects like statues, benches etc in your coverage. But considering the color is very important.
Work on leaves
You should go for leaf and canopy area when the sky remains apparent and blue. Blue sky acts as a distinct background of green leaves and you can go into more deeper position of leaves like veins. Be conscious to avoid bug chewed leaves. When you need to get closer to the object, use micro lenses of 100 mm of diameter. On the other hand when you need more interpretation it is convenient to use an extension tube or coupling rings on two lenses.
Dont use thick leaves or leaves of the same pattern. For this your photo looks gloomy and repetitive.
