For shipbuilding lumber required first and its requirement boosted up with the help of the Industrial Revolution. People made paper from wood pulp and this process established in the mid 1800s.

Americans looked for new land and natural resources and for this purpose they move to the west all over the 19th century. According to the Homestead Act in 1862 the settlers needed at least 160 acres land per family so, the move to the west for it. A large number of trees grown on that plot and it was important for homesteaders to clear the land before it's used.

The selection of working place was water based in the past. The loggers usually left the place after collecting the trees. Moving the logs through the water was something easy but the loggers began to face problems when they went further inland. The most popular method of that time was pulling timbers. This method included the horses and oxen to haul logs over rough roads or skid tracks. It was more convenient for the log drivers to drive logs to their desired places when the log workers used to work near a stream. People liked to make a special rail way using heave timbers and transport the logs to market through this timber rail line. By any means the log drivers brought the logs to the main water ways and from there the logs sent to different places like mills, factory or abroad countries.

In past, only males engaged themselves in logging job and at the time of working they used special vocabulary. The persons who used to chop the trees were known as faller. After then the men who cut the trees in manageable size indicated as Bucker and whistle punk was a word that used to indicate those people who transported the logs to loading place. The equipments of logging job were only the axes, hand saws and animals prior to the invention of engine.

If you go back to19th or 20th century you can find the worker living near their working area. The loggers had to work hard all the day long and they used to live in an unhygienic place. They affected by different diseases and parasites and used to wear the same cloth for many days. They believed that, a true brave man can face all the adverse conditions.
